About Black On Point
Overview
Founded in 2015, Black On Point is an organization dedicated to highlighting and supporting African American artists within the artist community at Hunters Point Shipyard. From its inception, Black On Point has worked to increase the visibility and impact of Black artists, ensuring their contributions of the artists are recognized and their presence strengthened within the local creative landscape.
The organization was established by founding members Dolores R Gray, Nyya Lark, and Leslie Printis, all long-standing artists at the Shipyard. These founders identified a critical need: to elevate the work and visibility of the diverse group of Black artists contributing to the Shipyard community. Drawing on their deep involvement and experience, they came together to create a collective that would address these needs directly.

Community Role and Partnerships
Black On Point works closely with the Shipyard Trust for the Arts’ Artist in Residence (AIR) Program, a key offering designed to support and integrate new artists into the Shipyard community. The AIR program offers an eighteen-month residency for three local artists, providing time, space, and community support to develop their work. Black On Point’s affiliation with this program helps ensure that Black artists are not only represented but are actively supported as they navigate and contribute to the vibrant Shipyard environment.
Impact
Since its founding, Black On Point has played a crucial role in raising the profile of African American artists at the Shipyard. Through advocacy, programming, and community engagement, the organization has worked to ensure that Black artists are celebrated, their voices heard, and their artistic practices recognized as integral to the broader artist community.
