Artist in Residence Program

History of STAR’s Artist in Residence Program

The Shipyard Trust’s Artist in Residence (AIR) Program supports exceptional artists from the Bayview Hunters Point community with an 18-month residency, providing free studio space and access to opportunities that advance their artistic careers. These artists enrich the creative community at the Hunters Point Shipyard and strengthen connections with the surrounding Bayview Hunters Point community.

Long-time shipyard artist and Black On Point member JoeSam. (period intentional) was instrumental in starting the STAR Artist in Residence program in 1996, providing a free studio to talented young community artist Malik Seneferu. Malik has gone on to become a very successful artist with a permanent studio at the shipyard, thanks in part to JoeSam.’s support. Malik serves as a mentor to many up-and-coming artists in the community.

Black On Point works closely with the Shipyard Trust’s Artist in Residence (AIR) Program. Black On Point’s affiliation with this program helps ensure that Black artists are not only represented but are actively supported as they navigate and contribute to the vibrant Shipyard environment.

Current Artists in Residence

STAR and Black On Point congratulate Julian Rodriguez, Cariesha Newt, and Michael Reed on their selection and welcomes them to the Hunters Point Shipyard Artist community!

Former Artists in Residence

Below is a snapshot of all the Artist in Residence (AIR) recipients since the program began in 1996. Among the benefits of the program is that it exposes the artists to the benefits of being part of the the Hunters Point Shipyard Artist community. Many of them elect to apply for studio space at the shipyard after their residency ends. Artists in Residence that still maintain a studio at the shipyard are indicated with an asterisk.
